Transgression

The yacht Transgession was en route from Richard's Bay, South Africa to Nossi Be, Madagascar. She was in frequent radio contact with other yachts in the area, and with a Radio Ham operator in Kenya, but these contacts ceased on 8 June 1998.

No official search and rescue operation has been mounted, because Madagascar has no facilities or funds to mount such an operation. However, the area in which their last transmission was made, makes the search and rescue responsibility that of Madagascar, as explained here by RCC Australia:

"The area in which Transgresssion was last known to be is the responsibility of Madagascar and under international rules [the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention and the Search and Rescue (SAR) convention] the responsibility lies with the country in whose area the vessel was last known to be.

"It is up to the responsible country to initiate any SAR action in their own area although that country may accept assistance in the form of search vehicles (aircraft/vessels) or information such as weather or search planning data. The responsible country also carries the cost for such searches unless the provider of any assistance is also willing to carry such cost. Private individuals are also at liberty to carry out search activity and pay for it by raising their own funds."
